Handicrafts Development House

Our place is on Nayan Chand Dutta Street, inside Kanti Bhawan. It’s an old building, the kind you see around this part of the city. We call ourselves Handicrafts Development House, but mostly we are just a group of people working with a lot of different materials. The rooms are usually filled with the smell of wood or fabric, depending on what we are working on that week. We spend a lot of time talking to the workers and seeing how things are coming along. It’s not always a smooth process. Sometimes things break or the colors don't come out right, and we have to start over. That’s just how it goes when you aren't using big machines for everything. We have piles of stuff everywhere. It might look messy to someone walking in for the first time, but we know where everything is. The street outside is narrow, so getting things delivered can be a bit of a headache. We usually have to carry boxes by hand from the main road. We don’t have a website that shows every single thing because the stock changes so fast. People usually just call us or stop by to see what’s new in the back rooms. It’s a quiet way to earn a living, tucked away in this corner of the neighborhood, and we like it that way. We just keep making things and hope people find a use for them in their daily lives. It is simple work.
