Graphite India Limited

Being located at 31 Chowringhee Road means we are right in the middle of everything that happens in this part of town. It’s an old building with high ceilings and that specific smell of old paper and city dust. We get to work at Graphite India Limited and the first thing is usually dealing with the noise from the street below. Chowringhee is never quiet, is it? There is always a bus honking or someone selling something on the pavement. Our office is functional, with desks that have been here for years and filing cabinets that sometimes stick when you try to open the bottom drawer. We spend our hours going through reports and managing the day-to-day tasks that keep a big operation like this moving. It isn't always exciting, but it is steady work. We drink a lot of tea from the guy who comes around in the mid-morning. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we’ve got too many files stacked up to even think about moving them. We don't have a fancy reception with someone in a suit; it’s just us doing the work. You get used to the rhythm of the traffic and the way the light hits the dusty windows in the late afternoon. It's a real place where people actually work hard, not some polished showroom you see in a magazine. We usually have a stack of newspapers on the side table that nobody ever reads, but they have been there for months. We just focus on the numbers.
