Command Hospital Complex Diffence is located right near the Kolkata Medical Research Institute, which is a very active part of the city. You can always hear the sounds of Kolkata from our windows, with the buses and taxis constantly honking and people rushing by. Inside the complex, it’s a bit more contained, but there is still a lot of movement. The building is quite spread out and has some nice green patches between the wings. The grass grows really fast in the humidity, so it often looks a bit wild before the maintenance crew gets to it. We see a lot of people coming and going for their various appointments, and the waiting rooms are usually packed by the time the sun is fully up. We have these old-fashioned ceiling fans that click steadily as they turn, which is a sound you just get used to after a while. The walls are thick brick, which helps keep the heat out during those really hot summer afternoons. Our records office is a bit small and filled with shelves that go all the way to the ceiling. It can be a bit of a struggle to find things sometimes, but we manage. We’ve been a part of this community for a long time, and we know many of the regulars who come through. We share our lunches and talk about our families during the quiet moments. It’s an honest, hard-working environment without any of the fancy trimmings of a modern office.
