Central Typewriters

If you walk down Kiron Shankar Roy Road near the High Court, you will find us at 8/2 on the ground floor. This area is always buzzing with lawyers and clerks, and being so close to the Calcutta GPO means there is never a dull moment. Here at Central Typewriters, we have been surrounded by the sound of clicking keys for as long as I can remember. People often think these machines are from a different era, but we still see them coming through our door every week. The shop is on the ground floor, which is good because these old typewriters are heavy to carry. We have shelves lined with ribbons, keys, and various metal parts that we’ve collected over the years. It’s a bit dusty in the corners, no matter how much we sweep, because of all the paper and old oil. Sometimes a client will bring in a machine that hasn't been used in twenty years, and it’s our job to see if we can get it moving again. We don't have a website or anything like that. Most folks just know we are here near the court. It’s a small shop where the lights are a bit dim, but we know where everything is. You might have to wait a bit if we are in the middle of a tricky repair, but there is always something interesting to look at while you stay and chat.
