Bela Daga Boutique

We are based at Maheshwari Niwas, which is number 28 in the SB Block of New Alipore. It’s a nice, leafy part of Kolkata, and our boutique, Bela Daga, fits right into the neighborhood. Being in a residential building like this gives the shop a much more homey feel than a typical storefront. People often say it feels like they are just coming over to a friend's house to look at clothes. We have a lot of sarees and fabrics spread out on the tables and hung up on the walls. The lighting is soft, and we usually have time to sit down and talk to whoever walks in. It’s not the kind of place where you feel rushed or pushed to buy something. We take a lot of pride in the pieces we select, but we don't go around making a big deal about it. We just show what we have and let people decide for themselves. The afternoons are usually the busiest when the ladies from the surrounding blocks come by after lunch. We spend a lot of time discussing borders, colors, and how a particular drape looks on them. Sometimes the rains in Kolkata make it hard for people to get out, so we have some quiet days too, which we use to organize the cupboards. It’s a very personal way of doing business, and we wouldn't have it any other way than this.
