Bagha Art Saloon

Down on Sudhir Chatterjee Street, you will find our place at 43 A. It is called Bagha Art Saloon, though we are mostly just a regular hair cutting shop for the people living in this part of Kolkata. The streets around here are old and narrow, and we have been a part of this block for a good while. Inside, it looks like most other saloons you have seen. We have the chairs lined up and the big mirrors that have seen a lot of faces over the years. I think the name comes from a time when people thought of hair cutting as more of a craft, but today we just focus on giving a decent trim. It gets quite warm in the afternoons, but we have the fans going and the door open to catch whatever breeze comes down the street. We see a lot of students and workers who live nearby. They come in, get their hair shortened, maybe a shave, and then they are on their way. There is no waiting list or fancy booking, you just walk in and if a chair is free, you sit down. I like the rhythm of the work. You meet everyone from the neighborhood and hear all the stories. It is just a small business trying to do right by the people who live around Sudhir Chatterjee Street. Nothing more, nothing less than that. There are no frills or extras, just a simple shop.
