B R Singh Hospital

Sealdah is always a rush, and being here at B R Singh Hospital is no different. The station is so close that you can almost feel the trains. It’s a big, old place with high ceilings and walls that have been painted over more times than I can count. We see people from all over because they just get off the train and walk here. It’s a lot of walking for us too, these corridors are long. The lights hum a little bit in the evenings when things finally start to quiet down. We don't have many frills. The benches are hard, and the floors are that old stone that stays cool even when it’s boiling outside. Our staff is mostly people who have been in the city forever. We talk about the local football matches during our breaks. The food in the canteen is okay, nothing to write home about, but it fills you up. We spend our shifts making sure things are in order, even if the building itself feels a bit chaotic sometimes. There’s always someone asking for directions to a specific ward, and we usually have to walk them there because the signs are a bit small. It’s a busy life here in Sealdah. We don't have a lot of quiet moments, but that’s just how it is. It's a plain, working hospital that handles a lot of folks every single day without making a big fuss about it.
