Being out here in the Five Star MIDC in Kagal means we are surrounded by a lot of noise and heavy machinery. At Ambey Vaishno Steels Pvt. Ltd., the day usually starts with the sound of trucks backing into the yard. We spend a lot of time moving heavy metal around and checking the weight of things. It is a big, open space at Plot No. B 71, and the floor is always covered in iron dust or grease. The sun hits the metal roof in the summer and it gets quite warm inside the shed. We drink a lot of tea to keep going through the shifts. Sometimes the paperwork gets piled up on the desk in the small office cabin, but the main work happens out on the floor. It isn’t a glamorous job, but we’ve been doing it for years. Dealing with steel is heavy work and your hands are rarely clean at the end of the day. We have guys coming in and out all the time, looking for specific sizes or checking on their orders. The machines have their own rhythm, and you get used to the clanking sounds after a while. Most of us have worked together for a long time, so we just know what needs to be done without talking much. When the power goes out, everything gets strangely quiet until the generator kicks in. It is just a regular factory life in an industrial zone.
