At Shree Ganapathi Textiles, things are usually loud because of the machinery and people moving rolls of fabric around. It’s been like this for as long as I can remember. The street outside is narrow, so when the delivery vans come, everything sort of stops for a bit. We spend our days looking at threads, checking colors, and making sure the looms are doing what they’re supposed to do. There’s dust from the cotton everywhere, it’s just part of the job. We don’t have a big reception desk or anything like that. You just walk in and you’re pretty much in the middle of the workspace. My hands are usually a bit rough from handling the material all day. We talk to a lot of local weavers and suppliers. It’s a community thing around here. Everyone knows everyone else’s business. We keep our overhead low so we can just keep the doors open and the machines running. We aren't trying to change the world, just trying to make good fabric that people can actually use. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait it out, chatting on the steps until it comes back on. It’s just the way it goes in this part of town. We just keep working until it gets too dark to see the patterns clearly.
