Parameswari Textiles

Down at 42 (1-B) on Kulathupalayam Road in Vengamedu, that’s where you’ll find us. It’s a bit of a walk from the main bus stand, but the road is usually quiet enough. Parameswari Textiles is mostly just a large room filled with rolls of fabric and the smell of cotton. We spend most of our mornings moving things around to make space for whatever arrived the day before. The floor is concrete and stays cool even when it’s hot outside. We have a big table in the center where we measure things out and check for any pulls in the thread. It’s not a fancy showroom. It’s a workspace. There are threads everywhere on the floor, no matter how much we sweep. The light comes in through the side windows, which helps when we’re trying to see the colors properly. We don't really have a reception area, just a stool near the entrance. Most people who come by are regulars who know where everything is kept. We’ve got a small cupboard for our lunch boxes and a water cooler that makes a loud gulping sound every time someone uses it. Working here in Vengamedu is steady work. We just keep our heads down and handle the textiles day by day. It’s a lot of physical work, lifting and shifting, but we are used to it by now. The fan on the ceiling wobbles a bit but it still works fine to keep the air moving.
