M D Fabrics is right here on Periyar Salai in Vengamedu. It is a busy street and we have been at number 74 for a while now. Most days start early when we unlock the front and start moving things around to make room. There is always a lot of dust from the road because of the trucks going past, so we spend a good amount of time cleaning the shelves. We deal with all sorts of cloth here. It gets quite hot in the afternoons, but the fans keep things moving enough to get through the day. People from around the neighborhood stop in to see what we have on the rolls. Sometimes it is quiet and we just sit and talk about the news or the weather. Other times, three people come in at once and it gets a bit crowded in the small space. We keep the inventory stacked up high. You can find us easily if you know the landmark nearby. My cousin helps out when things get busy during the festival times. We don't have a fancy setup, just some solid tables and good lighting so people can see the colors clearly. It is a simple life running a fabric place here. We just try to get the orders right and keep the place organized enough so we can find the specific thread or weave someone is asking for. The neighborhood has changed over the years but this corner stays the same. We get the morning sun through the front door which helps wake us up before the work starts. There is a tea stall just a few doors down where we get our daily drinks.
