Malhotra Rice & General Mills

Being right on the G.T. Road makes Malhotra Rice & General Mills a pretty noisy spot. You have trucks and buses flying by at all hours. It’s a lot of movement. We’ve got the gates open early because that is when the first loads usually arrive. The air is always thick with the smell of rice being processed. We have a few rooms at the back where the staff can rest. It’s not fancy, just some cots and a fan that rattles. We spend a lot of time checking the moisture in the grain. If it’s not right, the whole batch is a problem. We don’t use any high-tech gadgets, just our hands and years of knowing how it should feel. The G.T. Road is good for getting things moved out fast, but the dust from the road gets into everything. We spend half our time sweeping. It feels like a never-ending job. People stop by because they see us from the highway. We talk to them while the machines are thumping in the background. Sometimes we have to shout to be heard. It’s a hard way to make a living, but it’s what we know. We don’t have a website or anything like that. If people want us, they just drive up to the gate on the G.T. Road and yell for one of us to come out. It’s been this way for a long time now.
