Out here on Balram Road, things stay pretty steady at Jagdish Rice Mills. We spend our days mostly looking at piles of grain and making sure the hullers are doing what they’re supposed to do. It’s a straightforward setup. We don’t go in for big meetings or fancy offices. Most of the time, the owner is out on the floor with everyone else. The road outside can get a bit crowded with trucks, especially when the season hits its peak. It gets loud inside the mill, so we do a lot of shouting just to hear each other. We’ve had some of the same guys working the machines for over a decade now. They know the sounds of the motors better than anyone. We just focus on getting the rice bagged and ready. Sometimes the power goes out and everything stops, which is a headache, but we manage. It’s just the way it is in this part of the country. We aren't trying to change the world or anything, we just want to make sure the work is done right by the end of the day. You’ll see us there from early morning until the sun goes down. It’s hard work, and your clothes will definitely smell like rice hulls by the time you leave. But it’s honest work. We don't have a receptionist, so you just walk into the yard and find us. Usually, someone will be around the back loading a truck or checking the weighbridge.
