Down here on Express Road, things move pretty fast. Our shop at 92/90 is right in the middle of the bustle of Mall Road in Kanpur. It is a noisy area with all the rickshaws and cars constantly honking outside the door. We see a lot of office workers coming in during their lunch breaks or right after they finish for the day. The shop stays open late because that is when most men in the neighborhood have time for a shave. I remember when we first moved into this building, the floor was all cracked, but we fixed it up ourselves. It’s a men’s salon, so the talk is usually about cricket or the local markets. We don't have a big team, just a couple of us who know how to handle a pair of scissors. The humidity in Kanpur can be tough, so the water cooler is the most important thing in the shop. Sometimes people just come in to sit under the fan for five minutes. We don't mind. We’ve seen the street change a lot over the years, but the way we cut hair hasn't changed much. It’s honest work. We use the same soaps and creams that everyone knows. It’s not a fancy place, but the mirrors are clean and the razors are always ready for the next person who walks in from the street to get their hair trimmed.
