Inside the Hindustan Tannery Compound, Salcon Leather has its own little corner on Plot No. 17. Jajmau is a tough place to work because of the dust and the constant activity of the other tanneries around us. Our building is at 88/74, and it’s a very practical space designed for heavy work rather than for looks. The floors are concrete and usually have scraps of leather or tools lying around. We spend our days handling hides and making sure the processing is done right. It’s physically demanding, and by the afternoon, everyone is usually pretty tired. We don't have a fancy website or a salesperson in a suit. Most of our business comes from people who know where to find us in the compound. The air is thick with the smell of the tanning process, which is just the smell of work to us. We have an old desk where we keep our ledgers, and the phone rings more than we can answer sometimes. It gets very hot in the summer, and the fans just move the warm air around, but we keep the water cooler full and stay at it. We are just a local operation trying to do a good job with the materials we have. Life in the tannery compound is never quiet, but it’s where we belong and we know the trade well after all these years of being here.
