Leather Oath

Makhania Bazar is a busy place, and that’s where you’ll find us at 42/46 Meston Road. Kanpur is known for leather, so being right here in the middle of it makes sense for us. The building has seen better days, but it’s sturdy and keeps the sun off. We spend our mornings going through the stock and making sure everything is where it should be. Leather Oath is just a small team of us. We don’t have a fancy lobby or anyone to greet you at the door. You usually just walk in and find someone working at a desk or checking a pile of hides. Meston Road is always loud with carts and bikes going by, so we keep the windows shut when the dust gets too much. There’s a specific smell of treated leather that hangs around the office all the time, but we don’t even notice it anymore. We keep things pretty basic. There’s a wooden table where we do most of the inspection. If a customer comes by, they usually just pull up a plastic chair. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy from Monday to Saturday. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we just sit by the window to use the natural light. It’s just how life goes in the bazaar. We keep a calendar on the wall where we mark the shipping dates in red ink. It’s simple, but it works for us.
