Jajmau is really the heart of the leather trade in Kanpur. Sir Iqbal Street is where we have been operating Feroz Tanners for a long time. This is not the kind of place with marble floors or fancy air conditioning units. It is a working tannery at 379/1-D. The floors are often wet because that is just how the process of tanning works. There is always a strong smell of hides and the stuff we use to treat them, but after a few years, you do not even notice it anymore. It is a tough job and you have to be okay with getting your hands dirty every single day. We have guys who have been with us for many years, and they know the skins better than anyone else. We check the thickness and the feel of every single piece that comes through. The sun gets incredibly hot in Kanpur, so the early mornings are our busiest time of the day. We move heavy loads around until the evening. It is not a glamorous life, but it is what we do to make a living. We supply to different people who go on to make shoes or jackets. Our job is just the very beginning of that long chain. We do not have a website that gets updated. We just have our address and our reputation in the local market.
