We are based at 184 B 1 Budhia Ghat in Jajmau. Being located right near the ghat is very practical for a tanning business like ours. We have been here for a long time, and the building definitely shows it. Tanning leather is a tough, messy process. We spend our days working with raw hides, water, and various chemicals. It isn't a job for people who don't like to get their hands dirty. The smell is quite strong, but we don't even notice it anymore. We have a small team of men who do the heavy lifting. The floors are always wet and we have to wear heavy rubber boots all day. In the monsoon season, the river level rises and we have to be careful about flooding. It's a very basic setup without any of the fancy machines you might see in newer factories. We prefer doing things the old way because it's what we understand. We don’t have an office with a computer; we just do everything by hand. Our customers are mostly local manufacturers who need leather for shoes or bags. We don't do any promotion or advertising. We just focus on getting the tanning right and keeping our regular buyers happy. It’s hard work, but it’s a living.
