Glaze Traders

Glaze Traders is based out of the Indian National Tannery in Jajmau. If you've been to this part of Kanpur, you know it’s all about the leather and the trade. The smell of the tanneries is something you get used to after a few days. Our spot is inside the main complex. It’s an old place with a lot of history in the walls. We do our trading work from a small room that has seen better days. The floor is concrete and the windows are high up. We handle various materials and supplies. It’s often very dusty and the noise from the machines next door never really stops. We don’t have any fancy air conditioning, just a couple of old ceiling fans that creak a bit. We talk to a lot of different people every day, from truck drivers to other traders. We drink our tea from small glass cups while we discuss the prices and the shipments. It’s a gritty kind of work. Nothing like those clean offices in the city center. But it’s what we know. We’ve been part of the Jajmau scene for a long time. The roads around here are full of potholes and heavy lorries. You have to be careful when you drive. We stay until the light fades and then we head home. The tea guy comes around twice a day and that's usually our only break.
