Solar Cashews

We are tucked away in Nathans Arcade on Malaviya Avenue. Thiruvanmiyur is a busy part of the city, especially with all the traffic on L.B. Road. Our space is mostly taken up by big jute sacks full of raw cashews. You can smell the nuts the moment you walk through the door. We spend most of our time sorting through them to make sure they are dry and clean. It is a lot of sitting on low stools and looking at each nut one by one. Our hands get a bit stained from the shells sometimes. We do not have any big fancy machines for the roasting, just the basic stuff that has worked for us for a long time. The arcade can get a bit dark in the afternoons, so we have to use bright lamps to see what we are doing. Customers come in off the street wanting a kilo or two for a festival or a wedding. We weigh everything out on an old scale that still works perfectly. It is a quiet business for the most part, except for the sound of the traffic outside. We just try to keep the stocks full and the bags sealed tight. It is simple work and we have been doing it this way for as long as I can remember.
