Manush Unorganised Womens Worker Progress Union

We started this union right here in Thiruvanmiyur, over near Ganesh Nagar. If you know the area near Bajaj Nagar, you've probably passed our place at No 2/4. It's not a big office or anything fancy, just a room where we get together to figure things out for the women working around here. A lot of the ladies who come in are doing odd jobs or working in houses and shops. We spend our mornings talking about what’s going on at work and what people need help with. Sometimes the fans are noisy and the chairs don't match, but that doesn't really matter when there's work to do. We keep track of things in old ledgers and notebooks. It gets busy during the middle of the day when everyone stops by for a bit between their shifts. People from the neighborhood know us. We've been here for a while now, just trying to make sure everyone gets a fair shake. Thiruvanmiyur has changed a lot over the years, but the needs of the workers stay pretty much the same. We don't have a big staff, just a few of us making sure papers get filed and questions get answered. It’s mostly about showing up every day and listening to what the women have to say about their jobs. If someone has a problem, they come to the 2/4 address and we sit down to talk. It's a simple setup, but it works for what we need to do. We just keep going one day at a time.
