Our collective is based at No.2/71, right on Mariyamman Kovil Street in Pa. Killanur Village. Being in the Ulundurpet area of Villupuram, we’re surrounded by people who have spent their whole lives in the fields. Sri Lakshmi Narasimmar Collectivefarming Farmer Producer Company Limited was set up so we could stop being at the mercy of middle-men. We’re just a group of neighbors who share a common goal of keeping our farms healthy. The village is small, so we see each other at the temple and then go work our plots. It’s not an easy life, especially when the rains are late or the pests get into the crops. We try to help each other out with seeds and tools whenever someone is falling behind. There’s no corporate ladder here, just people in boots getting their hands dirty. We handle all the local crops that grow well in this Villupuram soil. Sometimes we have to stay up late figuring out the books, but mostly we’re outside. It’s a community effort more than anything else. We want to make sure the land stays in good shape for the next generation. We don't have a big marketing team; we just have our reputation and the quality of what we grow right here in the village. It's a slow process building something like this, but we're in it for the long haul because it's our home and our livelihood.
