Our setup is in Shed 2002, over in Phase 3 of the GIDC in Vatva. If you know the industrial estate, you know it can be a bit of a maze back here. The shed is quite large, which is good because we have a lot of equipment that takes up a lot of space. Research sounds fancy, but mostly it involves a lot of trial and error with different materials and machines. There are often smells of chemicals or heat hanging in the air. We wear lab coats, but they usually have a few stains on them from the day's work. It’s not a spotless laboratory like you see on TV. There are notebooks scattered around with scribbled calculations and piles of samples waiting to be tested. The floor is concrete and can get pretty cold in the winter months. We’ve been in Vatva for a while now. The noise from the neighboring sheds is just part of the background we live with. Sometimes the power goes out for a bit, and we just sit outside and wait for it to come back on. We don’t have a front desk or a receptionist. If you come by, you just have to shout a bit to get someone’s attention over the machinery. We focus on the data and seeing what actually works. It’s a lot of long hours and sometimes things don’t go right the first time. We just keep at it until we get a result that makes sense. It’s honest research.
