Chajju Ram Muni Lal Rice & General Mills

If you drive down G T Road near Mukerian, you’ll see our place right across from the sugar mill. Chajju Ram Muni Lal Rice & General Mills has been standing here for years, and the walls have that old mill smell of grain and dust. It is loud when the machines are running, so we usually have to shout a bit to be heard over the hum. We get a lot of trucks coming in from the surrounding fields. The yard gets muddy when it rains, and we spend a lot of time cleaning off the boots before stepping inside the office. It is not a clean or quiet job, but it is what we know how to do. The sugar mill across the way brings in a lot of traffic, so there is always something to watch from the front gate. We deal with rice and whatever else comes through the general mill side of things. Some days the machinery acts up, and we have to spend the afternoon with a wrench in hand getting it back to work. We don't have a big marketing department or anything like that. We just have our names on the sign and our word to the people who bring their harvest here. It is a long day on G T Road, but we’ve grown used to the rhythm of the seasons and the noise of the trucks.
