We spend a lot of time here at the Gopal Pur site in Jajpur. It is mostly about the steel and the heat coming off the metal. The M.K. Chack area is always busy with trucks coming in and out all day long. You see a lot of dust on the windows and the workers' boots. It is not a fancy place at all. Most of us just focus on getting the shifts done and making sure the gate stays clear. Sometimes the rain makes the ground a real mess around the office. We have a few desks and some old fans that barely keep the air moving. The local tea stall just down the road is where everyone goes during the breaks. It feels like a small town operation even if the name on the gate is big. We mostly deal with the locals who live around the district. People come by asking about work or checking on deliveries. It is just a regular spot in Orissa where things get made. No one wears ties here. We mostly wear work shirts that get dirty before lunch. The sun hits the steel yard hard in the afternoons. It makes everything bright and hot. We just keep the records in the back and answer the phone when it rings. It’s hard work, but that’s just how it is in this part of Jajpur.
