Our shop is number 54 over in the Pink City area. If you’re standing opposite the Hawa Mahal, you can pretty much see where we are. It’s right near Tripolia Bazar, which stays crowded from morning until late at night. Sankhala Handicrafts has been in this spot for a long time. It’s a small space, and we have things stacked up high on the shelves. There’s always a lot of noise outside from the traffic and the people walking by to see the sights. We spend most of our time sorting through different items, checking the paint or the carvings. Sometimes the dust from the street gets in, so we’re always wiping things down. It’s just how it is in this part of town. We don’t really do much advertising. People usually just wander in because they’re passing by on their way to the bazaar. We handle a lot of different handicrafts, mostly stuff made by local people we’ve known for years. It’s a bit cramped inside, especially when we get a new shipment in and boxes are sitting in the middle of the floor. My family has been doing this kind of thing for a while. We know the regulars who come by just to chat and see what’s new. It’s a simple business. We open up early, drink some chai, and wait for the day to start moving. There is always something interesting to look at if you have the time to browse.
