The shop is over in the JDA Shopping Center at S-18 in Vaishali Nagar. It’s a small space, mostly taken up by the big freezer cabinets that hold all the different tubs of ice cream. The hum of the compressors is the background noise of my whole day. We spend a lot of time just scooping and weighing portions. My wrist actually gets quite sore by the end of a busy Saturday. Kids come in and press their hands against the glass, so I’m constantly cleaning off fingerprints. When the power goes out, which happens more than I’d like, we get really worried about the temperature in the freezers. We have to keep the lids closed tight and wait it out. The smell of the waffle cones being toasted is probably the best part of the job. It’s a lot of simple tasks like refilling the spoon containers and making sure we haven't run out of chocolate sauce. The shopping center gets a lot of foot traffic, especially in the evenings when families are out for a walk. Sometimes people can't decide what they want and they stand there for ten minutes while a line forms behind them. We just try to be patient and keep things moving. It’s a straightforward job, nothing too complicated, just keeping things cold and serving the local neighborhood people who stop by for something sweet.
