If you walk down Mohidhin Street in Kothpet, you will probably smell us before you see the sign for Amaravati Spices Pvt Ltd. We are at number 582. It’s an old street and it gets quite narrow, so when the spice trucks come to unload, everything kind of stops for a while. It’s a lot of heavy lifting. We spend most of our time moving bags of turmeric, coriander, and cumin around the floor. The air inside is always a bit dusty and it makes your skin tingle after a few hours. We aren't a big flashy company with a glass office. Most of the space is just for storage and packing. We have a few old wooden desks where we keep track of the orders on paper ledgers. It feels a bit old-fashioned compared to the new shops opening up, but it works for us. The neighbors sometimes complain about the smell when we are processing the peppers, but they also come by to buy a small bag for their own kitchens. We wear aprons that get stained pretty quickly and there is always a layer of fine spice dust on the windows. It’s hard work and the hours are long, especially during the festival seasons when everyone wants to stock up. We just keep our heads down and get the orders filled as they come in. Sometimes the delivery guys get lost looking for the street, so we have to go out and wave them down. It is just the way we have always done things here.
