Out in Sugandhya, Hooghly, we’ve got our little operation set up at Sushanta Kolay’s house. Hooghly Sugandha Farmer Producer Company Limited is really just a bunch of neighbors who decided to pool our resources. We are listed under Khotian No-1515, which sounds official, but mostly we’re just out in the fields every day. Sushanta is the one who keeps track of the papers while the rest of us are busy with the actual farming. It gets pretty busy around harvest time, and that’s when you’ll see the most activity around the house. We don’t have a big sign or a lobby. If you want to talk to us, you usually just walk up and see who’s around. We focus on what grows well in this soil and how to get it to people without losing too much money in the process. There’s a lot of talk about water and pests, the usual things farmers worry about. We aren't trying to be some big corporate entity. We just want to make sure our families are okay and the farm stays productive. Sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate, or the prices in the market drop, and we just have to deal with it together. It’s a simple, honest way of working. We don't have any marketing tricks; we just grow what we grow and try to do it as best as we can.
