Jiya Lal Mittal Dav Public School

Jiya Lal Mittal Dav Public School is right on Kalanaur Road in Gurdaspur. It is a main road, so there is always traffic going by, mostly tractors and buses. The school building has been here for a long time. You can see the history in the brickwork and the old trees in the yard. Every morning, the bell rings and you can hear the shuffle of hundreds of feet moving toward the classrooms. It is a sound we have gotten very used to. The staff room is usually a mess of notebooks and half-drunk cups of tea. We do not have a fancy corporate office. Everything happens right here on the ground. The classrooms have high ceilings which help a bit with the Punjab heat. Sometimes the rain makes the road outside a bit muddy, but the kids do not seem to mind much. We spend our days making sure the lessons are done and the playground is safe. It is a simple life for the teachers and workers here. We know the local shopkeepers and the people who live along Kalanaur Road. There is no big mystery to how we run things. We just show up, open the doors, and get to work teaching the local kids. It is a community school through and through. Nothing is ever perfect, but we do what we can with what we have. It is a busy, noisy, and honest place to be every day.
