Vidhyashram School is located right on Karur Road in Dindigul, at number 16 A / B. It’s a very busy area, so there’s always the sound of buses and lorries passing by outside. Sometimes the building even shakes a little when a big truck goes over a bump. We have a gate that stays closed to keep the noise and the dust out as much as possible. Inside, it’s a different world. The courtyard is where the kids gather, and it gets quite hot by mid-morning. We have fans in every room, but they don't always do the job on the really sunny days. The walls are covered with charts and drawings that the students have made over the months. We don’t spend money on fancy decorations, so the walls look a bit lived-in and honest. Our staff room is always a bit cluttered with half-corrected papers and tiffin boxes. We share our stories there during the short break. The benches in the classrooms are made of heavy wood and they’ve been around for a long time. You can see where kids have carved their names into the corners over the years. It’s a practical place for learning. We don’t have a lot of frills. We just make sure the students are where they need to be and that the day goes according to the schedule. I think we’ve managed to keep a good routine despite the chaos of the main road.
