Our place, Smt Machines (India) Limited, is located right on the G. T. Road in Mandi Gobindgarh. If you are sending us anything by post, we use P. Box No. 71. This town is famous for its steel and iron, and we fit right in with all the other industrial units around here. The air is always a bit thick with the smell of coal and metal being worked. We spend our days around heavy machinery, and it’s a noisy environment most of the time. You have to shout a bit to be heard over the sound of the shop floor. We don’t have a lot of time for sitting around. There is always a machine that needs adjusting or a new order that needs to be started. We’ve been here in Punjab for a long time, and many of the workers have grown up in this industry. It’s hard work, and your hands are rarely clean by the end of the day. We have a small office area to handle the paperwork, but the real heart of the business is out where the metal is. We take our tea breaks together and complain about the weather when it gets too humid. It’s a practical life. We don’t worry about fancy office furniture or making the place look like a showroom. As long as the machines we build are solid and the customers are happy, we feel like we’ve done a good job.
