Gurubasappa Khanavali

We run a small khanavali in the Hosur area of Hubli. You can find us in the Mr Shetter Building, which is quite close to the old KSRTC depot. Most people around here know the building. A khanavali is a very traditional kind of place. We don't have a long menu with hundreds of items. We usually just cook a few things every day and that is what we serve. It is very much like eating in someone's kitchen. The tables are simple and we use basic plates. My family has lived in Hubli for a long time, so we know the local taste. We don't use a lot of fancy spices or try to make the food look like art. It is just honest, local food for working people. The area around the old bus depot is always busy and noisy. We get a lot of laborers and office workers who want a quick and cheap meal. We don't have air conditioning, just a couple of ceiling fans that hum all day. The walls could probably use a new coat of paint, but we are more focused on the kitchen. We open early in the morning to start the preparations. It is a simple life and we are happy with it. We don't want to become a big chain. We just like our small spot in Hosur.
