Living and working near the Maithon Dam in Dhanbad is a bit different than being in the middle of the city. Kendriya Vidyalaya is situated right out here where the air feels a bit clearer, though the coal dust from the rest of the district still finds its way in sometimes. The school has that standard look you’d expect, with long corridors and those heavy wooden doors that have been painted over a dozen times. Most of our days are spent following the schedule, ringing the bell, and making sure the kids stay off the grass when it’s raining. Since we are near the dam, we get a lot of families who work for the government or the power projects nearby. It makes for a steady mix of people. The playground gets pretty dusty in the summer, but that doesn’t stop the games from happening during the break. We don't have a lot of fancy decorations on the walls, just the usual charts and maps the teachers put up. It’s a practical place. We focus on getting through the syllabus and making sure the electricity stays on so the computers work. You’ll usually find a few of us sitting near the gate in the evening, just watching the traffic go by toward the dam. It is a quiet life out here in 828207, and we are just one part of this little community by the water.
