Thenral Pazamuthir & Department Store

We are located at number 5, Gurumpaliyam, right on Railway Station Road. Because we are so close to the station, we see a lot of people rushing past every day. Some are catching the early train and just grab a piece of fruit on their way. We are a mix of a fruit shop and a department store, so we have boxes of apples and oranges sitting next to shelves of household cleaners and biscuits. It is a bit of a tight squeeze inside when we have more than four or five customers at once. The smell of fresh mangoes or bananas is always there. We have a small fridge for milk and cold drinks too. The ceiling fan wobbles a bit, but it keeps the air moving. We don't have a manager in a suit; it’s just us in our casual clothes helping people find what they need. The bins outside are usually full of empty crates by the afternoon. We get our stock delivered early in the morning before the trains get too frequent. It can be a noisy spot with the whistles and the traffic, but we are used to it by now. We don't have any big plans for the future, just making sure the vegetables are fresh and the doors are open when the commuters arrive. It is a busy but simple life here at Gurumpaliyam. We just try to keep everything stocked well for the neighborhood.
