Shivaganga Basaveshwara Farmers Producercompany Limited is based in Holalkere, over in Chitradurga. We work out of the SKP Suppliers building, which belongs to S P Manjunath. He’s been around for a while and knows how things work in this part of the state. Farming in Chitradurga is not easy because of the heat and the lack of water sometimes. We mostly deal with what the local farmers bring in. It's not a fancy office with air conditioning. We have some chairs and a lot of paperwork piled up on the desks. People from the nearby villages come by to talk about their crops or to see if there's any news on prices. We started this because doing everything by yourself is just too hard these days. If a group of us stands together, maybe we get a slightly better deal at the market. That's the whole idea. We don't use big words or have a grand plan. We just want to make sure the work we do in the sun all day counts for something. There’s always someone stopping by for a tea and a chat about the weather. It’s a local thing, run by people who actually know what dirt feels like under their fingernails. We keep things plain and simple, just like the way we live here in Shivaganga.
