Vijay Smock Stitch

Our little shop is tucked away at number 47 on Mahalakshmi Nagar 2nd Street. If you know the Porur area, you probably know how busy the main roads can get, but our street in Karambakam is a bit more tucked back. We focus on smocking and stitching here. It’s the kind of work that takes a lot of patience and steady hands. The space we have isn't very large, just enough for the machines and the tables where we do the handwork. You’ll usually see a few of us hunched over the fabric, making sure the pleats and stitches are sitting right. It’s a quiet kind of place most of the time, except for the sound of the needles moving. We’ve been in this neighborhood for a bit, and we like it here. There’s no big corporate office or anything like that, just a regular workroom where things get made. People from around the neighborhood stop by with their projects, and we do our best to get them done. Sometimes the scrap fabric piles up a bit during the busy weeks. We don't have a receptionist or anything, so usually, one of us just looks up from the machine when someone walks in. It’s a straightforward way to run a business. We just stick to what we know, which is stitching. The light in the afternoons is the best for seeing the fine details on the cloth, so we work hard then.
