Our place, Unitex Fashions (india) Pvt. Ltd., is tucked away at 19, Vinayagapuram, 2nd Street in Arumbakkam. It’s a quiet enough street, but inside the building, things move pretty fast. We have our cutting tables set up where the light is strongest near the front. The back is mostly for storage and where we keep the finished pieces boxed up. We don’t have a big sign out front or anything. People who need to find us usually know the way. We spend our days looking at sketches and making sure the fabric is cut the right way so nothing goes to waste. It gets a little cramped when we have a lot of orders going out at once, and you have to watch your step so you don’t trip over a roll of silk or cotton. The Arumbakkam area is convenient for us, and we’ve become a part of the local scene here over the years. We aren't into big corporate meetings or anything like that. We just sit at our desks or stand at the tables and do the work that’s in front of us. Lunch is usually eaten together around one of the big work tables once we clear the scraps away. It’s a practical way to run a business, and we prefer it that way. No fuss, just getting the garments ready and out the door every single week.
