Sri Ramana Garments

You can find us over in Virugambakkam at Sri Ramana Garments. The address can be a bit confusing because it’s New No. 216 but the old sign says Old No. 105 on Arcot Road. People get lost sometimes. It’s a busy road, always cars and buses zooming past the front door. We have been here for a long time. The shop is filled with the sound of sewing machines going all day. It’s a rhythmic noise you get used to after an hour. We make all sorts of garments. The floor is usually covered in little bits of thread and scrap fabric that we sweep up at the end of the shift. We aren’t a huge factory, just a local place doing our thing. The light in the back room is a bit dim, but the tailors don’t seem to mind. They’ve been with us for years. We sit on plastic chairs and talk about the weather or the traffic on Arcot Road while we work. It’s not a polished showroom. It’s a workspace. Sometimes the neighbors pop in just to chat while we are finishing up a batch. Being in Virugambakkam feels like home. We know the tea seller and the guy at the hardware store. We just do our work and go home when the sun goes down. There is always a pile of clothes waiting to be packed, but we take it one step at a time.
