You can find us at Salco House. It’s on 45 Evk Sampath Road over in Vepery. We’ve been dealing with leather and shoes for a long time now. The building is older and has seen better days. You can smell the tanned leather as soon as you walk through the front door. It’s a very strong scent that stays on your clothes. Some people don't like it but we’ve grown used to it over the years. We have different floors for different parts of the business. One floor is just for the raw hides piled up. Another is for the finished shoes waiting to go out. We have a lot of wooden benches where the guys sit and work on the soles. It’s a lot of hammering and the smell of strong glue. Saleem Leather And Shoe Exports isn't a modern factory. It's more like a big workshop. We have a lot of old tools lying around on the tables. Vepery is a good area for us. It's easy for people to find the building. We don't do much retail sales here. Most of what we make gets sent far away to other cities. We spend our mornings checking the quality of the leather pieces. If the leather is not good, we simply can't use it for the shoes. It's as simple as that. We have some tea in the afternoon when it gets hot and then finish up the day. The ceiling fans are always spinning fast but it stays warm inside. We just keep working. It's what we do every day.
