Saamy Mart

Saamy Mart is our little shop located at No. 172/214 on Bharathi Salai in Royapettah. It is a very busy street and we are right in the middle of it all. The shop is quite narrow, so we have to stack the shelves all the way to the ceiling to fit everything in. We carry all the basic things people around here need for their homes. My uncle and I run the place most days. We don't have any of that high-tech equipment. We mostly use a simple calculator and keep a logbook for the accounts. It feels like a real neighborhood spot. We know most of the customers who come in every morning. Sometimes the delivery trucks get stuck in the Royapettah traffic, so we have to wait a bit for new stock to arrive. The floor is made of old tile and it’s a bit cracked in places, but it doesn't bother anyone. We open up early and stay late. It’s not the easiest job, standing on your feet all day, but we like being part of the community. We don't do any big promotions. People just know we are here on Bharathi Salai. Sometimes it gets a bit crowded inside when more than three people are shopping at once. We just tell them to take their time. It’s a simple, honest business and we’ve been at this same address for a long time now. We just focus on keeping the shelves full and the shop open.
