We’ve been here at No.124 126B on Mettukuppam Main Road for quite some time now. This part of Sri Venkateswara Nagar gets really busy in the mornings when everyone is heading out to start their day. You can hear the traffic from Maduravoyal right outside our door almost constantly. Most days start with someone rolling up the metal shutters and making a bit of noise while the sun is still coming up. Inside Rabiya Clothing Company, it’s mostly just piles of fabric and the sound of sewing machines going all day long. We have these two units, 124 and 126B, that we use to get everything done. It’s not a fancy place by any means. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint and the floor has its fair share of scuffs from moving tables around over the years. Usually, there’s a stray thread or two caught on your sleeve by the end of a shift. We usually take a break around eleven when the tea guy comes by with his cycle. He knows exactly how we like it. The windows stay open to catch whatever breeze comes through from the main road, but mostly it just brings in the sound of horns and people talking. It’s a practical setup. We know the neighbors and they know us. When the power goes out, we all end up standing on the sidewalk waiting for it to come back. It’s just how things go here in Maduravoyal.
