Our company, R. R. Leather Products Pvt. Ltd., is situated at 214 in the Sidco Industrial Estate in Ambattur. If you know Chennai, you know Ambattur is a major hub for this kind of work. The smell of leather is the first thing you notice when you walk into our unit. It’s a strong, earthy scent that stays on your clothes long after you leave. We have large tables for cutting the hides and heavy-duty machines for the stitching. Making leather goods is a slow process compared to other fabrics, so things move at a different pace here. The floor is usually littered with small scraps of leather that we try to save for smaller items. We don't have a fancy front office; it's mostly just the production floor and a small space for the records. The heat in the industrial estate can be quite something, so we have big exhaust fans running all the time. Our workers are skilled at what they do, many of them having worked with leather for decades. We focus on making sure the edges are clean and the stitching is strong. There’s a lot of heavy lifting involved with the raw hides, so it’s physically demanding work. We just show up every morning, get the machines started, and work through the stack of orders until it’s time to go home.
