Periamet is a place where everyone knows about leather, and we are right in the middle of it on Karpura Street. Our place at number 12 is usually piled high with different types of skins. It’s not the cleanest work, to be honest. Your hands get stained and the dust gets everywhere, but it’s what we’ve always done. We get the raw materials and then we have to sort through them to see what’s good for what. Some days are slower than others. We might just sit there grading pieces for hours. The street outside is always noisy with carts and trucks moving stuff back and forth. You can hear the sounds of the neighborhood all day long. We don’t have any big corporate goals or anything like that. We just want to get the work done right so we can go home at the end of the day. There are a lot of leather shops on this street, so we just mind our own business and keep our heads down. The building is old, and the walls have seen better days, but it serves its purpose for storing and working the leather. We keep a few chairs for when friends or regulars stop by to chat. It’s a simple life, mostly spent surrounded by the smell of tanned hides and the sound of the street. It’s how my father did it and how we do it now.
