Marson Leather House

If you walk down Wuthucattan Street in Periamet, you’ll find us at number 40. Marson Leather House has been sitting on this corner for quite some time. The smell of leather is pretty strong as soon as you step inside. It’s not a showroom with bright lights. Instead, we have shelves piled high with different hides and scraps. Some days the floor is covered in shavings. We deal with all sorts of leather pieces, mostly for people who make shoes or bags. The street outside is usually crowded with carts and bikes. Inside, it's just a few of us cutting and sorting through the stock. We don't use fancy computers for everything; a lot of it is written down in old notebooks. Sometimes the roof leaks a bit when it rains hard in Chennai, so we move the good stock to the back. It’s a bit dusty, but that’s just how a leather place is. Customers come in, feel the grain, and we haggle over the price for a bit. We know most of the other shop owners around here. It’s a community. We don’t try to be anything we aren’t. It’s just a regular business selling leather out of a small space. We keep the doors open late if there’s a big order to finish. That’s about it for us.
