About Y. R. Leathers – Fashion & Trends in Chennai
We are down at No. 49 Shiek Ali Subedar Street in Periamet. This neighborhood is well known for leather, so we fit right in with the other shops around here. The building we are in is quite old and the doorway is a bit low, so you have to watch your head when you enter. Inside, the smell of leather is very strong, which I like, but some people find it a bit much. We spend our days sorting through different hides and checking for any marks or holes. It is a lot of physical work, moving heavy bundles around the floor. We don't have air conditioning, just a couple of big ceiling fans that move the air around. The street outside is always congested with carts and people carrying goods. It is a very old part of the city and everything feels a bit worn out, but in a good way. We have been doing this for a long time, passed down from my father. We know which leathers are good for shoes and which ones are better for bags just by feeling them with our hands. We don't have a website or anything like that. People usually find us by word of mouth or by just walking down the street. We take our time with the grading because we want to be sure of what we are selling to the traders who come by.
