The shop is at No. 2 Narayana Chetti Street in Periamet, which is really the heart of the leather area here. If you walk into C-block near Surajmal Vihar, you can smell the leather from down the street. It’s a heavy, earthy scent that never really leaves your clothes. Sree Ayyappaa Leather Exports India has been operating out of this building for a long time now. It’s a bit of an old place with high ceilings and floors that have seen better days, but it’s sturdy. We spend most of our time dealing with crates and large sheets of hide that come in from the tanneries. There’s always someone shouting across the floor about a shipment or a weight discrepancy on a scale. It’s a lot of physical work, lifting and moving things around to make sure the export orders are packed right. We don't really have a reception desk or a fancy lobby. You just walk in and you're right there in the middle of the workspace. My uncle used to run the place, and now I’m here most days trying to keep the paperwork from getting lost under piles of samples. Periamet is always busy, so there’s a constant sound of horns and carts rattling over the stones outside. We just keep our heads down and focus on the leather. It’s what we know how to do, and we’ve been doing it this way for years without much fuss.
