Working at Omega School on Medavakkam Main Road in Madipakkam means you get used to the city noise pretty fast. It’s a busy stretch of road, and there’s always something happening right outside our gates. I’ve spent many mornings standing out front just watching the traffic and greeting the parents as they drop their kids off. The school building is tucked in tight among the other shops and houses in the area. It’s not a sprawling campus, so we have to make the most of the space we have. The classrooms are close together, and you can usually hear the teacher next door if they’re speaking loudly. It’s a bit cramped at times, especially during the lunch break when everyone is trying to get outside at once, but we make it work. We have a lot of stairs, and I think I’ve climbed them a thousand times this month alone. The office is usually a mess of folders and lost sweaters, which we try to organize every Friday, but it never stays that way for long. We don’t have a lot of fancy slogans or polished brochures. People come to us because we’ve been in Madipakkam for a long time and they know who we are. It’s a straightforward place where we focus on getting through the lessons and making sure the kids are safe until their parents pick them up in the evening.
