Our place is at No.9 Balaji Street in Kodambakkam. It’s a busy neighborhood and things can get pretty tight on our street when the ready-mix trucks are moving in and out. We deal with cement and concrete, so there's a lot of noise from the engines and the mixing drums. The office is right there on the ground floor. It’s got a few desks and some old calendars on the walls. We spend our days staring at schedules and trying to figure out how to beat the Chennai traffic. If a truck gets stuck, everything else gets backed up, so it's a bit stressful sometimes. We have a small area where we keep some tools and extra gear. The staff usually eats lunch together in the back. We aren't really about fancy meetings; we just stand around and talk about the next job. There is always sand and grit on the floor that we tracked in from outside. We’ve been in Kodambakkam long enough that we know the local shortcuts. People call us when they're pouring a slab and need things to arrive on time. We do a lot of shouting to be heard over the machinery. It’s hard work and the days are long, but we’re used to the rhythm of it by now. We just focus on getting the concrete where it needs to go before it sets. The rain can slow things down, but we just keep pushing through the orders.
