M.K. Engg. is located at number 23 in the Sidco Industrial Estate over in Ambattur. If you’ve ever been to this part of Chennai, you know it’s just row after row of small factories and workshops. Our place is one of the older ones in this section. We don’t have a big sign or a fancy lobby to greet people. Most of the time, the front gate is just open so we can get some air moving through the workspace. We focus on basic engineering tasks, mostly turning parts and fixing things that have worn out. It’s a messy job, and our clothes usually show it by lunchtime. We’ve got a couple of lathes and a milling machine that have been with us for years. They aren't the newest models, but we know exactly how they behave. The noise in the estate can be quite a lot during the peak hours, with everyone working at the same time. We don't really do much in the way of fancy business meetings. Usually, if someone needs something, they just walk in and show us a part or a sketch. We talk it over right there on the shop floor. It’s a simple way of doing things, but it works for us. We try to get things done right so people come back, but we don't make any big promises. We just do the work as it comes in.
